Here Comes the Sun: Deconstructed Student Essays

Tourism on the Islands

Jamaica has launched multiple tourism campaigns starting from the 1950s. In the 1980s-1990s (the time the novel takes place), the "Make it Jamaica. Again." campaign was released after political conflicts in the country that "stained" the "idyllic" image of the island and decreased tourism. At this time, the AIDS epidemic was starting to spread which spread homophobic views across the United States and the world. This section explores the contrasts between the colonial narratives of tourism ads and Here Comes the Sun, including views on queerness (in the tourism industry).
