The Witch

Historically, Black women have been accused of being witches for centuries. This accusation stems from the resistance to colonial White Christian practices that are deemed as the standard of life. This racist profiling often appears in literature. A popular example of this is Tituba, the Black witch of Salem. When Black women have alternative realities or perspectives on the world, white onlookers feel the need to disrupt and destroy these realities. Over time, the dissemination of colonial ideologies has entered many aspects of life, especially so in Black communities. In the novel, the character Verdene is called a witch as result of her past.
