neocolonialism
This term refers to the adaptable way in which colonialism reinvents itself to maintain a dependent relationship between nominally independent countries and imperialist countries through economics, culture, and politics. Fueled by globalization and cultural imperialism, the dynamic of dependency is enforced via debt/loans, multinational corporations (including the tourist industry), and the exploitation of resources for external profits. Behind the guise of national sovereignty, this system leaves the power dynamics of colonialism intact.
