While escaping a fight, he runs to Verdene for a hiding place and help with his wounds. Before developing this relationship, Charles was one of the community members who isolated Verdene and believed she was evil. Verdene is perceived this way as a result of her sexuality and her past. After getting to know her, Charles realizes she is not who he initially perceived her to be.
