The Glass Key… With a Samurai

To be perfectly honest: before the last two days of class, I never really saw much of a similarity between The Glass Key and Yojimbo. Now, however, I have seen the light.

While watching the movie screening the only connection I saw was the oh-so-wonderful main-character-gets-beaten-within-an-inch-of-his-life-and-then-escapes-the-two-lackeys scene. I am actually convinced that every movie I see now needs to have a scene just like that in it, complete with a Jeff of sorts. I also saw that both our Samurai and “Ed” were relatively of the same stalk (see previous blog) but I never really thought to look much closer.

But thanks to today’s class and the list of similarities between the two, I can now begin to see more and more of The Glass Key in Yojimbo. Having noted that, I have to tip my hat to Kurosawa for his ingenious take on the book. I think he did it quite classily. It isn’t blatant or obvious to the casual viewer (which I was, apparently, during the screening), but if you take a closer look, you do begin to see the differences.
