Plan ahead for Domain pricing changes

As an education-focused hosting provider, our pricing philosophy is simple: keep costs as low as possible without compromising quality and keep things transparent for all our customers. In response to continued increases in our costs for offering domain registrations, we're thus increasing the Base Domain Price (i.e. Pricing for a .com, .net and .org domain for the first year of registration) to $19/year. For new customers the new price will become effective from July 1, and renewing customers will see the changes reflected in their renewal from September 1.

We believe choosing a hosting provider shouldn’t require guesswork or hidden tradeoffs. That’s why we’ve put together a comparison to give you a transparent overview at how we stack up on both price and value and help you plan ahead for the next academic year.

Over the past year, we've loved getting to celebrate our users here at Reclaim. From our first inaugural Student Showcase (and a second coming around the corner soon) to our recent Women's Showcase, it has been an absolute joy to show off projects our community has been working hard on.

Our mission has always been to offer the most accessible way to publish on the open web, so that our customers, our people, can share what's most important to them - whether that be an Omeka collection full of carefully curated online exhibits, a WordPress personal portfolio, a Scalar library stacked with published research, or a really deep love and appreciation for the band Phish.

While many may choose large, faceless hosting companies to create their websites, we pride ourselves on being something different: a hosting company built around relationships. Every website on our platform represents a person, a story, an idea, or a community, and we genuinely care about the work happening there. When a site goes down, when someone is trying to troubleshoot a tricky plugin, or when a creator is looking for the right tool to bring their idea to life, our team is here as real humans who understand that these aren't just files sitting on a server. They're projects that matter.

Many of our customers know our team by name, and we know many of you by the incredible things you create. That connection is at the heart of everything we do. We aren't just here to provide hosting. We're here to support the people building on it.

Coming Soon: Faces of Reclaim

Over time, we realized we wanted a dedicated space to share those stories. A place to celebrate the people behind the projects, highlight the creativity happening across our community, and give others the opportunity to learn from the experiences of fellow Reclaimers.

Faces of Reclaim is a podcast series that dives into the stories behind the websites, digital projects, and online spaces built on Reclaim. Each episode features a different member of our community and explores what they created, why they created it, the tools and technologies they used along the way, and what they learned through the process.

These conversations are meant to feel less like a formal interview and more like a conversation with a fellow open web builder. They are a chance to talk about the ideas, challenges, discoveries, and moments of inspiration that shape projects on the open web. These conversations take a deep dive into topics such as open edtech advocacy to building digital capabilities, sharing research and pushing the limits of innovation.

Through Faces of Reclaim, we hope to not only showcase the incredible work happening across our platform, but also inspire others to start creating, experimenting, and building their own spaces on the web.

Faces of Reclaim will launch September 29th, 2026 as a part of our new and improved Reclaim Podcast Network, and we can't for you to hear our first stories.

So, are you interested in sharing your project and your story? We're beginning our interviews now, and we'd love to have you on! If you'd like to be a part of the Faces of Reclaim project, please reach out to support@reclaimhosting.com for more information. We can't wait to showcase what you've made!

Vulnerability in UpdraftPlus

We are writing to inform you of a vulnerability in the WordPress plugin UpdraftPlus. As of June 10th at 3pm ET, we have started an automated update procedure for this plugin on WordPress sites hosted across our infrastructure.

What happened?

  • A vulnerability disclosure for UpdraftPlus was published on June 10th in Wordfence's Vulnerability Database: Critical Unauthenticated Authentication Bypass Vulnerability Patched in UpdraftPlus WordPress Plugin
  • This vulnerability makes it possible for attackers to forge and run commands as an administrator on sites with UpdraftPlus installed that have been connected to UpdraftCentral, the plugin’s remote site management dashboard.
  • This vulnerability impacts UpdraftPlus versions 1.26.4 and earlier. It was patched in version 1.26.5. Some older versions of UpdraftPlus appear to use an older versioning scheme and report themselves as version 2x, which is likely impacted as well.
  • UpdraftPlus is not installed by default by Reclaim Hosting, but has been recommended as a backup solution for WordPress sites.

Current Status

  • As of June 10th at 3pm ET, we have started an automated update procedure for this plugin on WordPress sites hosted across our infrastructure.
  • This procedure triggers WordPress's built-in update functionality to upgrade the plugin to/replace the plugin with the latest version available.
    • This update procedure covers all WordPress sites with UpdraftPlus installed on Domain of One's Own, Managed Hosting, Reclaim EDU, and Shared Hosting.

Next Steps

  • We recommend all users of UpdraftPlus check for and install any available updates to the plugin, particularly if you are using version 1.26.4 and earlier or a version reporting as 2x.

One great thing about the web is that publishing is easy. Preservation, on the other hand, can be a bit more complicated. Platforms can change and projects lose funding; faculty retire and students graduate. Digital scholarship projects that once felt permanent can quietly fade away if nobody plans for what comes next.

That's why our next Community Professional Development Session on June 16 will focus on website archiving and preservation.

At Reclaim, we've spent years helping people create and host websites, but creating them is only part of the story. What happens to those sites, projects, portfolios, and digital collections years down the road? What happens when the grant ends, the server is retired, or the software that powered a project is no longer maintained?

We discussed many of these subjects last Septmeber with the Webrecorder team, who reminded us that preserving a website is about much more than saving a backup.

Today's web is dynamic, interactive, and deeply connected. Preserving it means preserving not only the files, but also the context, functionality, and experience that make the work meaningful in the first place.

During our upcoming session, we'll explore the differences between backups and archives, discuss practical approaches to web preservation, and share tools and workflows that can help institutions, educators, and individuals think more intentionally about the long-term future of their digital work.

We'll also talk about sustainability. One of the most compelling themes from our past discussion on web archiving is that preservation works best when it gives people agency. That can be achieved by using open formats, portable archives, and approaches that don't lock content into a single platform or service. The goal isn't simply to keep websites online, but also to ensure that the work, stories, and communities represented by those sites remain accessible for years to come too.

Whether you're responsible for a departmental website, a digital humanities project, student portfolios, institutional archives, or simply your own corner of the web, we hope you'll join us for the conversation. If your website is worth building, then it's also worth remembering.

Join us on June 16 at 12:00 PM ET for our free Archiving and Preservation Community ProfDev Session.

This year we are excited to take part in the OER26 Conference, Openness Reimagined: Continuity, Change and Shared Vision – happening on 22-23 June 2026, in Milton Keynes, UK.

Reclaim has long been a supporter of this wonderful conference and in 2021 we even joined forces for OERxDomains21. We took part in 2023 in Scotland, and in 2024 in Ireland, and this year we are heading to the UK’s Open University for much open education goodness!

Co-Chaired by the Co-Directors of GO-GN, the Global OER Graduate Network, Dr. Robert Farrow and Dr Beck Pitt, this year's conference sets out to explore open education as a changing landscape:

“Openness has expanded participation, reshaped practice, and challenged assumptions about who education is for and how it should be delivered. Yet openness is not static. It evolves alongside the social, political, and technological conditions in which it operates. The rapid development of AI systems, platform-based infrastructures, shifting policy environments, new economic pressures, and renewed global debates about equity and justice are reshaping the terrain of open education.”

From Experiment to Enterprise: Open EdTech Case Studies

Inspired by the conference theme “Open Practices and Pedagogical Innovation” our talk will showcase key points from several new Open EdTech case studies that show who and how institutions who are at the forefront of Open EdTech adoption develop, scale and deploy open source educational services.

As well as showcasing how open source technologies move from experiment to enterprise service, we will highlight just how important such work is for developing digital capabilities, for faculty and for students.

If you are attending the event, come along to our session and get your hands on some of our lovely stickers featuring the talented Bryan Mather's artwork!

Vulnerability in Gravity Forms plugin for WordPress

We are writing to inform you of a vulnerability in the WordPress plugin Gravity Forms. As of June 3rd at 1pm ET, we have started an automated update procedure for this plugin on WordPress sites hosted across our infrastructure.

What happened?

  • A vulnerability disclosure for Gravity Forms (a paid plugin for WordPress) was published on June 1st in Wordfence's Vulnerability Database:

Gravity Forms <= 2.10.0.1 - Unauthenticated Arbitrary File Deletion

  • This vulnerability makes it possible for unauthenticated users to delete arbitrary files from an impacted site.
  • This vulnerability affects Gravity Forms versions 2.10.0.1 and earlier and was patched in version 2.10.1. The current version of the plugin as of this writing is 2.10.3.
  • Gravity Forms is used on many of Domain of One's Own project homepages as part of the "Request Form" functionality, and is also a broadly popular paid WordPress plugin.

Current Status

  • As of June 3rd at 1 p.m. ET, Reclaim has started an automated update procedure for WordPress sites with the Gravity Forms plugin installed.
  • This procedure triggers WordPress's built-in update functionality to upgrade the plugin to the latest version available.
    • This update procedure covers all WordPress sites with Gravity Forms installed on Domain of One's Own, Managed Hosting, Reclaim EDU, and Shared Hosting.
    • This update procedure also includes all Domain of One's Own project homepages where the "Request Form" functionality is implemented using Gravity Forms.

Next Steps

  • We recommend all users of Gravity Forms check for and install any available updates to the plugin, particularly if you are using version 2.10.0.1 or earlier.
  • Consider enabling Automatic Background Updates for the Gravity Forms plugin from the WordPress Dashboard's Plugins page (/wp-admin/plugins.php)
  • If you have a site with an expired license for Gravity Forms where it is no longer possible for you to receive updates to the plugin, we recommend deactivating the Gravity Forms plugin until you've renewed your license.

The Reclaim Student Showcase Returns for 2026 https://bavatuesdays.com/the-reclaim-student-showcase-returns-for-2026/ Tue, 02 Jun 2026 11:40:58 +0000 https://bavatuesdays.com/?p=37499 Continue reading ]]> The call for entries for Reclaim’s Student Showcase 2026 is now open through June 30th. The showcase is open to projects built through Domain of One’s Own, Shared Hosting, and WordPress Multisite.

One of the things that struck me most about last year’s inaugural showcase was not only the quality of the work, but how much of it I never would have seen otherwise. There were digital storytelling projects, research sites, portfolios, multimedia experiments, and all manner of creative work happening across our community that largely existed within the context of a particular course, institution, or program. The showcase provided a rare opportunity to see all of that work gathered together in one place.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about storefronts and exhibition spaces through the lens of bava.studio. One of the things I love most about having a physical space is the window. You can put something in it and suddenly work that might otherwise go unseen becomes part of the life of a community. People stop, stare, ask questions, wander in, and conversations start.

Building a Blog You Can Walk Into

In a lot of ways, the Student Showcase is exactly that kind of window. It’s a chance to put student work on display and let people see what is actually happening across courses, programs, and institutions. Whether it’s a digital storytelling project, research site, portfolio, publication, multimedia experiment, or something that doesn’t fit neatly into any category, it’s worth sharing.

Tetris Diorama and Event

Window at bava.studio not dissimilar from the Student Showcase to fly your freak flag

So if you’re teaching, supporting, or working alongside students doing interesting things on the open web, now is a great time to submit their work. The showcase feels less like a competition than an exhibition—a chance to celebrate the creativity, experimentation, and care students bring to the web every day.

The web could always use more examples of people making interesting things. This is one of the few opportunities each year to get a glimpse of the awesome work happening across the Reclaim community, and I hope you’ll consider submitting something.
